Is There a Magic Formula to Decision Making?

As much as I would love to tell you there is a magic formula for making decisions; there is not. More often than not, our instinct is to write a “pro” and “con” list to determine the fate of our future. There is a perception that the “list” will provide the right decision. In reality, there are no right or wrong decisions. There are just the decisions that we make.

Weighing decisions can be a double edged sword. Choosing between two different things that you like, or that you are interested in, will inevitably bring some sense sadness or disappointment because there will be a choice you just can’t choose. Deciding between two different things will be bittersweet at times, but TRUST your decision.

When you are young, the possibilities are endless. The older you get, possibilities become more limited because of life circumstances – partners, kids, pets, homes, jobs, etc. The key to making decisions, when your options are limitless, is understanding what you value. This is why you must learn what is important to you.

I recommend to “act as if…”. I suggest taking a few days to “sit” in each scenario. For instance, if you are choosing between graduate school and a job, “sit” in the job for a few days. Actually visualize going to work, making money, your commute, your lifestyle. After a few days, “sit” in the graduate school scenario. Don’t analyze. Don’t over think. Just listen to your body. Listen to your heart. What feels right?

Remember, you aren’t making choices for your parents or friends or partners. You are making choices for you. It’s not about pros and cons, it’s about what feels right to you because you’re the one who has to live with your choices.
